This is a design for a center channel speaker patterned after the dB515. Please be aware that I haven't built this speaker yet. But I've had several inquiries regarding the existance of a center to be used with the dB515 and, in my experience, extrapolating the dB515 design into this one is a reasonable thing to do.



I arranged the drivers on the baffle to minimize horizontal off-axis lobing much in the same manner as on the dB616C and dB616TLC.

 
 

 

This is a sealed design with a predicted bass response which is smooth. The Qtc is a nominally flat 0.707. The F3 point is 80 Hz which should allow excellent integration when the receiver's subwoofer low pass and LRC/surround high pass are set to 80 Hz.

   
The tweeter is the shielded version of the infamous Dayton "Silky" now known as the "Shieldy"... The round frame 5 1/4" woofer or the earlier pincushion frame can be used. If you go with the pincushion version (Parts Express part number 295-300), keep the driver center locations the same.

The crossover is identical to the crossover which was optimized for the dB515.

   
This is the response of the db515. The midrange sound, in my listening room, is surprisingly clean despite the appearance of the lower midrange rise which would ordinarily correspond to an overly warm presentation.

 

   
Basically, simple construction with just a 1" dowel bracing the baffles. 3/4" MDF. I made the front and rear baffles and ends 1/8" oversize (in relation to the dimensions shown in the drawing) in each dimension to allow trimming with a router trimming bit.  There is a 1" dowel brace between the front and rear baffles. I recommend you assemble the five parts which comprise the top first then attach it and the bottom and side between the front and rear. It helps to cut the 5 7/8" dimension of the sides, bottom and 5 top pieces with the same saw setup.
